Please Turn off all Cellular Devices

For such a promising cinematic year, this was the least that I’ve gone to the theatres in ages. Mostly it was due to my lack of time and inability to sacrifice my home bound Friday night routine, but if there had been more exciting movies maybe I would have bothered to at least rent or download the ones I wanted to see. But that didn’t happen until about 2 weeks ago, when I realised that this blogpost was coming due and I barely had 2 movies that made the cut. So I commenced a two-week long movie-a-thon and watched all the movies that I thought looked interesting from the past year. As much as I love watching movies, the amount of backlog was so much that it cut into my reading and tv time so now I’m behind on those… Next year I am so not getting into this situation!

We’ll start off with a predictable hit; one who’s prequel made the list last year and which didn’t fail to disappoint as so many sequels do. I’m talking about Fast & Furious 6! Are you really surprised that I loved this movie? Hot cars, high-speed racing, and a cast of veritable hotties (so sad to hear about Paul Walker’s death last week, since it means that he won’t be in any of the sequels), what more could a girl ask for? I’m 99% sure that some of the stunts are totally fake, but it was so entertaining that there was no way that it didn’t make the cut!

The next film was a total surprise in how much I liked it. I had heard terrible reviews of We’re the Millers before seeing it, but it was playing at the cheap theatre and for an evening’s worth of entertainment $3 seemed like a fair price even if the film wasn’t great. Plus my mother was paying, since she’s decided that she likes to go see movies now that she’s retired. Besides how awkward it was sitting beside my mother while the characters almost-had extra-marital threesomes, laughed about enlarged phallus’, and watched Jennifer Aniston strip the movie was hilarious. Who knew that a stripper, a drug dealer, a runaway, and a dork pretending to be a real American family would be a smash hit?

Normally I think that magic of the card tricks variety (even the really fancy stuff) is so passe, but Now You See Me crossed the border between real magic that’s just sleight of hand and the complete suspension of belief that comes with urban fantasy stories like Harry Potter. I won’t wreck the ending for you, but I will point out that I knew something was up with that guy. You know the one that I mean.

Kings of Summer takes us back to the one year as teenagers when we all found our parents unbearable and wanted to run away. Most of us don’t actually go through with it (and settle for something dramatic like storming out to stay with our friends), but the boys in the movie do. They find a place in the woods to build a house, and spend the summer living like the Lost Boys, having no cares in the world, hunting things, and clowning around. Throughout their adventure I knew that they would have to go home eventually – after all, all children but one grow up – but I did not want the end to come like it did. Thank god that the snake (that I totally saw coming as soon as one of them found a shed skin earlier) didn’t actually kill anyone. Though I bet that the writer had that ending in place since it’s actually more realistic that a snake-bitten kid dies than gets to the hospital just in time.

Mafia movies aren’t usually my thing, but The Family is anything but typical. Each of the actors was perfect for their roles, and I was absolutely engrossed by their attempts to act like a normal American family living in France. It’s rather difficult to describe how amusing their hijinks are, so I’ll just tell you to go watch it for yourself!

Show Don't Tell

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Apparently our childhoods all ended with the release of the final Harry Potter movie this summer. Boy am I glad that Harry Potter didn’t define my childhood then, because I don’t plan on ever letting go of it. Sure, I like Harry Potter just fine, and the last movie did make my top 5 movies of 2011, but I got really sick of hearing people obsess about it. It’s just a fucking movie. If that’s all you have to remember your childhood by, then I feel really sorry for you. But anyways, the movie was pretty good, though it could have done without being 3D. It wasn’t filmed in 3D, just converted, so the effect isn’t quite the same, and honestly it would have been just fine in regular old 2D like the rest of the films. Best quote: Minerva McGonagall “I’ve always wanted to use that spell!”

I’ve always loved the whole Fast and Furious franchise, but the latest installment is definitely my favourite so far. I went with Aina and Beth and Adin on opening night in Kamloops, and it was well worth it! The stunts are ridiculous, the action sequences are flawless, and the heist was amazing. All of the best characters from the previous films are brought back, so the film is like one big reunion of ridiculous proportions. Ludacris is missing his ‘fro (damn) we don’t really get to see any classic drifting from Han, Paul Walker aka Brian O’Connor wears his shirt far too much, but we get to see Dwayne Johnson at his most badass. The facial hair is kind of laughable, but damn his character is awesome otherwise. As per usual, every time I watch this type of film I want to go drag race, but then I remember I have no car, and I don’t want to go to jail… Best quote: Roman Pearce “This shit just went from mission: impossible to mission: in-freaking-sanity!”

Ethan Hunt is about to face his biggest challenge yet. The IMF has been disbanded, he’s stuck with a crew of green agents with barely any equipment, and the world is on the brink of nuclear warfare. I was SO HAPPY when I heard they were doing a fourth movie in the Mission Impossible series! The last one was brilliant, and left the story in a really good place, but I like a good spy-thriller, and Ethan Hunt is one of my favourite spy guys (Bond will always be first obviously), so it was nice to hear that Tom Cruise had signed on to do another film before he gets too old. I don’t know what they’re going to do when he gets actually old, because he is so intrinsically Ethan Hunt. Hopefully, when ever they decide to replace him, he stays on as one of the producers and makes sure they don’t destroy the role because that would be super depressing. Best quote: Ethan Hunt “Mission accomplished!”

Not all of my favourite films were action-thrillers this year, which is why I chose The Inbetweeners film to provide a little comedy to the list. It’s the conclusion of the 3 season British television series of the same name, as the four boys who spent high school together go on vacation in Crete to celebrate their freedom after graduation. The film is full of hilarious and ridiculous moments that could only happen to these poor guys, who can never seem to get it quite right. All they want to do in Crete is party, drink, and get laid, but their antics and ridiculous behavior complicate things slightly… If you want some laughs, this is definitely a movie you should check out because it’s nothing less than ridiculous. Though I should warn you, the guys are kind of a bunch of twats with filthy language and a penchant for being inadequately clothed… Best quote: Will McKenzie (as narrator) “So smelling like an industrial accident in a Lynx factory and looking like the world's shittest boyband, we hit the town.”

I can’t gush enough about how amazing this movie is so I’m just going to give you a list of amazing things about it. 1: Bradley Cooper. 2: Bradley Cooper shirtless. 3: Bradley Cooper in a suit. 4: Amazing cinematography. 5: Complete mind fuck plot. 6: Based on a great novel. 7: Did I mention Bradley Cooper shirtless? Best quote: Eddie Morra “I don't have delusions of grandeur, I have an actual recipe for grandeur.”

F is for Far East Movement

Most people only just discovered the genius that is Far East Movement, but I've been listening to them since they did a track for the Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift soundtrack. They've changed their sound quite a bit between "Round Round" and "Like a G6," but I think the uniting theme is that their songs have a kind of comedic feel to them. What do you think?

Bitch Boots: A Sunday Shoe Story

On Friday night I went to see Fast Five with a few of my favourite gals, and I'm happy to report that the movie was much better than I anticipated. I came in expecting another entertaining, but mediocre at best film (as with the 4th installment of the series). But it was actually rather awesome, since they actually had a decent plotline, and all of the major characters from the previous films were reunited. There was even an appearance from Eva Mendes (though brief). Overall I loved the film, and I would love to gush more about it, but today isn't about movies, it's about shoes, as is every Sunday.
So on we move to the shoes that I wore to see the movie. Because I like to dress up when I go to the movies, but since this is considered a "guy movie," it was a little tricky to choose a pair of shoes that would be nice, but not too girly. Enter the "Bitch Boots." These babies  may have a steep heel, but they are by no means a feminine shoe. They're meant for kicking just a little bit of ass (or at least threatening to). They're just sexy enough, and just tough enough too. So they fit perfectly with the Fast and the Furious franchise, since cars (at least the good ones) are meant to have just enough sex appeal to balance out their overt masculinity. And yes, I do actually drive in these heels!

Fast Fashion

Car movies aren’t just for boys you know. Case and point, the entire Fast and the Furious franchise. Sure, the plots may centre around guys, and the drama is all about cars, and building cars, and stealing cars, and wrecking cars, and racing cars, but these movies have some pretty good fashion moments (as well as some horrible ones…)

The first movie is full of fashion no-nos. The biggest one is that the majority of the main characters run around in wife-beater tank tops, all the time. They’re always dirty, they’re obviously not classy, the worst part is that one of them not only wears a wife-beater, he combines it with a MESH wife-beater. That’s right, I’m not kidding. I honestly feel sorry for the guy, because he looks nothing less than ridiculous. The only fashion-do that is made in this movie is that the protagonist, Brian, wears Converse the entire movie. You all know how I feel about Chucks, so there’s no need for words.

see the guy in the back row far left?
yeahhhh that's mesh >_<
Eva loves her neutrals
2 Fast 2 Furious definitely kicks it up to second gear though (yes car puns, I know I’m a horrible person), since they introduce a proper female character who’s not just there as a sex object. Well, Eva Mendes is most well known for her physique, and she does show it off in the movie quite a bit (scene: tanning pool-side in a Bond-esque white bikini), but she has some gorgeous outfits in the film. Unfortunately since this is a “guy movie,” and it’s a bit older, it’s pretty difficult to find proper information on what she’s wearing in the film (read: impossible). But I’ve scooped up a bunch of photos of her outfits, and maybe you can tell me who designed them!
totally should have been a Bond girl!

love this dress!
(and the death glare of course)
The 5th (and hopefully last) installment of the series is coming out this Friday, and I’m hoping that the producers included a decent cut for the wardrobe department. But if they’ve spent it all on fast cars, and big explosions, I guess that’s okay too. Of course, there’s eye-candy already guaranteed (yum Paul Walker)!

all I want for X-Mas :)
